Bush tucker welcome to mark Australia Day

Found at:The Shropshire Star

January 26 2006

A taste of Australia is being brought to a Shropshire pub tonight as revellers in cork hats prepare to tuck into kangaroo burgers.

The bush tucker night is being held at the Sun Inn, Welshampton, to celebrate Australia Day and the festivities start at 7.30pm.

The pub is being transformed by staff for the night of Antipodean antics and it is hoped as many people will go along wearing Australian fancy dress.

Staff decided to go ahead with the event following comments from Australian customers who suggested it might be fun to do something to mark the big celebration.

The Australia Day holiday commemorates the arrival in 1788 of the first British settlers in what is now Sydney Harbour.

At the time the event was marked by parties and ceremonies at which hundreds of immigrants were granted Australian citizenship.

Staff at the Sun Inn said: “We thought we would do something to celebrate Australia Day as it’s a bit more unusual.”
