Healthy bush tucker pie developed

Aboriginal people are being encouraged to eat a healthy bush tucker pie to address a constant diet of high salt and high fat that leads to health problems like diabetes.

The hot pie has become a quick and cheap source of food in in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara (AP) lands in South Australia's far north-west.

Mike Quarmby has developed a healthier pie as part of a government funded bush foods project.

"We put a full complement of fresh vegetables in, so there's peas, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, onions, along with a genuine 30 per cent lean quality beef," he said.

The pie also contains native ingredients grown in the communities.

Two communities sell the pie, but Mr Quarmby says some community store managers are opposed.

He has urged them to adopt the pie under the AP lands healthy foods policy.
